Programs for PVD Educators of Color
We’re providing resources and career opportunities to support the long-term success of our educators, including bi-monthly emPOWER Meets connections for educators of color to network and support each other through their teaching journeys.

In an effort to retain and grow our teachers, PPSD has partnered with Latinos for Education to provide professional development for Latinx educators, through their Latinx Teachers' and The Aspiring Latino Leaders Fellowships. These fellowships provide access to a national cohort of 50-75 educators and leaders, supporting in advancing their journey and ultimately expanding their sphere of influence in their schools and beyond.
The Providence Public School District is providing up to 300 Praxis exam vouchers to support the certification efforts for our educators of color. We are prioritizing candidates who are currently on an Emergency Certification and those that are new hires to PPSD. Candidates will apply for vouchers and will be notified via e-mail. Unfortunately, this incentive is not available for ESL and Bilingual Spanish Praxis tests due to the $8K reimbursement already available. You can apply for a Praxis test voucher here.

As part of our recruitment initiatives for diversifying our teacher workforce, we have received a grant from the Rhode Island Foundation to support up to 25 new educators of color with student loan repayment over the course of three years. If you identify as a full-time, new-hired educator who is BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), AND have a minimum of $5,000 in student loans, you are eligible to apply.
At this time, we are accepting applications for the 2023-2024 cohort. We start reviewing applications in October 2023 and make final decisions by December 2023. Apply here!
In collaboration with our Equity & Belonging Office, we are hosting monthly emPOWER Meets connections for educators of color to network and support each other through their teaching journeys. These connection opportunities also allow best practices to be shared and culture and diversity to be celebrated.
