Mount Pleasant High School is in the process of establishing 5 Career and Technical Academies.
The Teacher Academy is in full swing and the students take CPR, First Aid and Babysitting classes to become certified. They also study for and are given the Para Pro Assessment exam in the spring. These students also take an EEP course under the guidance of Rhode Island College and earn 3 transferable college credits from RIC. We are in the process of establishing a mentoring program for these students to go into middle schools to tutor and mentor younger students. The senior students also go on full internships to 3 elementary schools in the spring. They prepare a lesson plan and teach it to a class under the guidance of the classroom teacher. We have added a new partnership to this program this year allowing the newcomer students in Mount Pleasant to shadow and learn from our Teacher Academy students. This has worked well for these newcomer students who seem to feel lost and out of place in our school. The teacher Academy students spend one on one time with these students to interpret school work, connect on a social atmosphere, feel free to ask questions and be understood in the language they know and become more established in the school.
The Computer Technology CTE Academy we offer is new and we are working under the guidance of John Mowry from CCRI. As a result of this training so far 5 students took the CISCO CCNA course last year and an astonishing 5 students passed the exam to move on to the next course CCNA2. These students have passed a freshman course offered at CCRI and are eligible to enter the workforce as it stands making $50 to $65 per hour if they choose to go into the this field which would include working for companies like Verizon and Cox Communications. These students are highly motivated and will continue on this pathway and learn more about coding, cyber security and repair computers.
Our Pre-Engineering Academy is also new and we are the only school to integrate Algebra 1 and 2 courses into the engineering curriculum. These students have built remote controlled race cars, remote controlled boats, competed in bridge building competitions and are exposed to special events and tours from our US Navy. They have access to a 3D printer and learn solid works as part of their training.
The new Police Academy is already being designed to incorporate what students will experience if they choose to someday attend a real police academy class. They will be exposed to all aspects of law enforcement. Take DNA and forensics classes. Train as they were experiencing the physical agility course held at the actual Providence Police Academy. These students will get behind the scenes tours of police stations, high tech finger print machines, dispatch units and courtrooms. They will be trained to write a police report the proper way and will also receive college credit in the near future. These students will also be exposed to FEMA certifications. Students take time to go to middle schools and mentor young students.
The Last Academy we are working on is Hospitality/Entertainment. These students will be exposed from hotel staffing and management to event planning like they will be hosting an event for the New England Patriots! They will visit restaurants and hotels. Study for Serve Safe and TIPs certifications along with any OSHA safety hours, CPR and First Aid Certifications. We are working with a nationally recognized curriculum of study so these students can work in any state they choose.
All of our programs are open to all students in Mount Pleasant from Regular Ed to ELL and New Comer.
