State, City, and PPSD Leaders Break Ground on Harry Kizirian Pre-K-8 School as Providence Advances Transformational Investments in Education Facilities
PROVIDENCE, RI – The Providence Public School District (PPSD) was joined by state and city leaders today as it celebrated a major milestone with the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Harry Kizirian Pre-K-8 School. This $55.2 million project exemplifies PPSD’s commitment to modernizing school facilities and providing high-quality educational opportunities for every student. The District is implementing a historic $1 billion school facilities plan with the goal of offering 100% of Providence students access to new and like-new schools by 2030.
The new Harry Kizirian Pre-K-8 School is being transformed into a Pre-K-8 model, offering students a seamless transition from early childhood through middle school while fostering a sense of community. The project includes dedicated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) rooms, new arts and music facilities, and enhanced security features. A secure, newly renovated lobby and separate entrances for lower (Pre-K-5) and upper (6-8) schools will provide a safer environment for all students.
"With the ground breaking of Kizirian, we are celebrating yet another major school facility project that will allow more Providence students to learn and succeed in high-quality learning spaces," said Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green. "Through collaboration among PPSD, RIDE, and the City of Providence, we’re creating more 21st century schools that meet the academic and social-emotional needs of students. Families have long called for transformational improvements to facilities and we are answering those calls.”
"Today marks an exciting moment for our community as we break ground on the new Harry Kizirian School," said Mayor Brett P. Smiley. "This project is more than just the construction of a new building—it's a significant investment in our future. We are creating a modern learning environment where every student will have the resources they need to succeed. This is a major step forward in our ongoing commitment to elevate educational outcomes for our students."
"This is a proud day for Providence and for the families of the students who will learn here," said PPSD Superintendent Dr. Javier Montañez. "This school will stand as a beacon of opportunity and innovation, reflecting our district’s vision to provide new or like-new schools for every student by 2030."
The $55.2 million project is supported by $45 million in state funding and will replace the outdated school built in 1960. The building prioritizes energy efficiency and sustainability, incorporating green construction practices and renewable power sources.
When completed, the Harry Kizirian Pre-K-8 School will feature:
-
A dedicated STEM room to foster skills in science, technology, engineering, and math.
-
Modern arts and music facilities.
-
A secure and newly renovated lobby with safer student drop-off areas.
-
Dedicated outdoor play spaces for Pre-K and kindergarten.
-
Stronger community connections through its integration with a nearby recreation center.
This project is part of PPSD’s $1 billion facilities plan to increase the percentage of students learning in high-quality schools from 5% to 100% by 2030, reflecting a shared commitment from PPSD, the City of Providence, and RIDE.
