Providence Public Schools, Providence Teachers Union Announce $10,000 Salary Increase for Special Education Teachers

Providence, RI — The Providence Public School District (PPSD) is pleased to announce an initiative aimed at bolstering support for specialized education roles and addressing an unprecedented increase in students’ needs. In partnership with the Providence Teachers Union (PTU) and the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE), PPSD is offering a one-time opportunity for a $10,000 standard base salary increase for educators transitioning into three specialized instructional areas: Special Education - Behavior Intervention Program (BIP), Exceptional Child Services (ECS), and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This salary adjustment will also apply to current Providence educators serving in these roles.

This initiative reflects PPSD's commitment to meeting the needs of students requiring specialized educational support while recognizing and rewarding the expertise of educators in these critical areas. Nationwide, there have been reports of school districts facing workforce challenges with high-demand areas such as special education. The opportunity is available to both current PPSD teachers and external candidates interested in these specialized positions.

"Investing in our teachers is investing in our students and the success of PPSD," said Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green. "By offering this salary incentive, we are taking a critical step toward ensuring that every child in Providence receives the support they need to succeed, especially those in specialized programs. This agreement showcases our dedication to improving both student outcomes and teacher satisfaction."

“Investing in our educators is essential to providing the highest quality education possible, especially in in-need areas like Special Education,” said PPSD Superintendent Javier Montañez. “This salary increase reflects our commitment to attracting and retaining talented educators who can make a significant difference in the lives of our students. I want to encourage those PPSD educators to consider these roles.”

“Our educators play a pivotal role in the success of our students, and this initiative recognizes the immense commitment of teachers taking on specialized education roles,” said PTU President Maribeth Calabro. “We are proud to partner with PPSD and the Commissioner to offer this meaningful compensation boost, which will help attract and retain the best educators for these critical positions.”
