Nathan Biah

Nathan Biah is the current Principal at Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School. He has worked in education for over 20 years, all with the Providence Public School District (PPSD). Nathan started in the District as a substitute teacher, working at various middle and high schools, before becoming a full-time math teacher. He then became Principal of Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School.

Nathan grew up in Monrovia, Liberia, and attended the country's most prestigious high school. At age 20, he was forced to flee Liberia due to civil war, and walked roughly 90 miles barefoot to a refugee camp in the Ivory Coast before coming to Providence as a refugee. Upon arriving in Providence, Nathan needed to obtain a GED in order to attend college, and while getting his education, he worked the night shift at Worcester Textile Company and attended classes during the day.

Nathan passed the GED, and earned his Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Rhode Island College in Providence, Rhode Island. Shortly after, he began teaching in PPSD. During this time, he was selected for a program to help the best teachers in the city become administrators, in which he received a scholarship to earn his Master's degree in Education from the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, Rhode Island.

Along with being a Principal at Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School, Nathan was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2020, representing the City's 3rd District. He serves as a member of the House Finance Committee, the House Education Committee, and the House Innovation, Internet, and Technology Committee.
