Melissa Hughes

Melissa HughesMelissa Hughes serves as a member of the Providence School Board, representing Region 1, which includes Wards 1, 2, and 3. She was appointed in early 2025 as part of the city's transition to a hybrid school board, combining both elected and appointed members for the first time in 60 years.

As a parent of two Providence public school students, Melissa has been deeply involved in the local education system. She has served on the School Building Committee, participated in the Providence Schools Parent Advisory Council, and actively engaged with the parent-teacher organizations at her children’s schools.

In addition to her role on the school board, Melissa serves as the lead between the board and mandatory external committees. She is a member of the Finance Committee, where she plays a key role in overseeing the district's budget and financial planning. Melissa is also actively involved in the Rhode Island Department of Education’s (RIDE) Collaborative Working Group, which focuses on initiatives aimed at improving educational outcomes and the transition back to local control.

Melissa is committed to the city's broader educational goals and has been an integral part of the mayor's efforts to transition control of Providence schools back to local governance. Her work in these areas reflects her dedication to improving the educational experience for all students in Providence, ensuring that they have access to the resources, opportunities, and support they need to succeed.
