Toni Akin

Toni Akin is a seasoned professional with a strong business acumen and vast experience in Public, Private, Government, Legal, Health Care and Education Management and more recently in the Sports and Recreational field. Her area of expertise lies within financial management and administrative operations.   She is passionate about education, and learned through her own life experience how education can elevate one’s life.

A product of the public school system, Toni was a graduate of East Boston High School but had to drop out of Bunker Hill Community College after the first academic year due to a family crisis.  Equipped with a high school diploma in Business and a few college credits earned at BHCC, she was later employed as a Federal sub-contractor at the John A. Volpe National Transportation Center to support the Global Satellite System.  Her work was recognized by the U.S. Army for efforts on the Automated Asset Tracking Program.  This award propelled her to continue the pursuit of higher education, and she enrolled in night classes at Newbury College which she graduated with high honors in Applied Science (A.A.S).   From there, she continued on towards achieving a Bachelor’s degree in Administration Management (B.A.M.) via traditional classroom studies combined with a distance learning program in conjunction with two other universities.  Earning this credential prompted her to work in the education management field with a desire to assist other students on their educational journey.

In addition to degrees conferred, Toni is certified in a number of disciplines including but not limited to Diversity Education by Cambridge Hill Partners, Fund Accounting and Purchasing and Payables by Tyler Technologies, Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) and ALICE Interactive Training, Public Contracting Law and Conflict of Interest Law.

Toni is a passionate, lifelong learner and a creative thinker, committed to the quality of public education for all students.  During her time spent on the Board, her top priorities are Student Achievement and to build positive relationships throughout the District.

Toni has lived in the North End of Providence for over 23 years with her life partner, Alice.  During her free time, she enjoys theatre, the arts, and volunteerism.
