PROVIDENCE, RI – The Providence Public School District (PPSD) will be opening its doors for the 2023-2024 School Year on Wednesday, September 6, 2023. Dr. Javier Montañez, PPSD Superintendent, will be joined by Governor McKee, Commissioner Infante-Green, Mayor Smiley, School Board President Rogel at the bus yard to welcome the new school year and send off the buses to begin picking up students for their first day.
The group will then proceed to welcome middle school students at Nathanael Greene Middle School where Providence College students will also be welcoming students with a first day clap-in. Greene will unveil a brand-new state of the art library/media center for students this year. Next, officials will visit Hope High School, a recently announced redesign school that will become visual and performing arts school where students will be welcomed into brand-new foyer and a brand-new school auditorium for the new school year. Following Hope, officials will visit Robert F. Kennedy Elementary School where K-5 students will be welcomed for the first day with a new safety upgrades and a new mural "Dream Big” by artist Kameko "Fu'una" Branchaud. This project was awarded through Providence’s Department of Arts, Culture, and Tourism's Call for Public Art, an initiative aimed at adding beauty and inspiration to Providence's school buildings. The mural was designed to encourage young learners to envision greatness, set ambitious goals, and embark on their educational journey with determination.
