PPSD Kindergarten registration is currently open through May 21. The school choice lottery for kindergarten placement will take place in early June. Families will be notified by mail.
Students must be 5 years old by September 1, 2021 in order to qualify for placement.
Families can begin the registration process online at www.providenceschools.org/prereg. Families will need to upload images of immunization records, a valid parent/guardian ID and proof of residency, as well as documentation verifying the student’s age. Registration staff will reach out to each individual family to complete the registration process. For assistance, email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 401-456-9297.
Kindergarten placement will be decided by lottery, but most school choices this year will be limited to neighborhood elementary schools or the two schools closest to a family’s official residence.
Elementary schools in Providence currently are rated at one, two and three stars, based on performance. Every family will have at least one two-star or three-star elementary school among their lottery options.
Families interested in enrolling their kindergartners in one of the district’s bilingual or dual language programs are not limited to neighborhood schools. This fall, bilingual options for kindergarten will be offered at William D’Abate Elementary and Feinstein Elementary at Sackett Street. Dual language options for kindergarten will be offered at Leviton Dual Language Academy and Fortes/Lima and Carl G. Lauro Elementary Schools. Due to construction at the current Frank D. Spaziano Annex, the Spaziano Elementary Dual Language kindergarten will also be held at Lauro Elementary for the 2021-22 school year.
Incoming kindergartners with older siblings will be given placement preference, regardless of whether that sibling is enrolled in a neighborhood school.
Families of students with existing Individualized Education Programs should provide a copy of the IEP. Additional testing for multilingual learners will be scheduled at a later date.
Families whose children qualified for kindergarten for the 2020-21 year but did not attend due to pandemic-related concerns will also be expected to enroll in kindergarten for the fall. If those families want their children to attend first grade in the fall must test out of kindergarten in order to qualify. More information on first-grade placement testing will be available in the spring.
