Students, teachers receive awards for civics projects
Last week at the Generation Citizen "Rhode Island Civics Day" event, almost 200 middle- and high-school students from Central Falls, Pawtucket, and Providence presented their semester-long civics projects at the Rhode Island State House.
The following classes and projects were awarded at the event:
Middle School Change Maker Award: Slater Jr. High School (Pawtucket) project on in-school policing; teacher, Michael Lehourites
High School Change Maker Award: Juanita Sanchez Complex (Providence) project on parks and recreation; teacher, Shannon Gormely
Grassroots Change Award: Roger Williams Middle School (Providence) project on school repair; teacher, Juanita Montes de Oca
Systemic Impact Award: DelSesto Middle School (Providence) project on mental-health services; teacher, John Lancellotta
Collaboration and Diversity Award: Blackstone Valley Prep Mayoral Academy project on racism within school punishments and suspensions; teacher, Aly Chatham
Action Award: Roger Williams Middle School project on the Community Safety Act and safe policing; teacher, Tricia Webb
Open Mindedness Award: Mount Pleasant High School (Providence) project on police recruitment; teacher, Todd Creel
