• SCHOOL CHOICE AT PROVIDENCE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

In Providence, school assignments for kindergarten, sixth grade and ninth grade students are determined by lottery, based on families’ top preferences. Families of current fifth- and eighth-grade students have until February 10, 2020 to submit their school choices, either online through the Skyward portal or through printed forms distributed by their child’s school.

Kindergarten families must register in person between Feb. 24 and May 1 at the Student Registration and Placement Center, 325 Ocean St., Providence. For more information on kindergarten registration, visit providenceschools.org/registration.

As a general rule, 80 percent of any Providence public school’s enrollment is drawn from its immediate neighborhood, while 20 percent of seats are reserved for non-neighborhood families. Siblings of older students already enrolled at a particular school for next year receive preference.

The lottery does not apply to schools or programs with special entrance requirements, such as Classical High School, Providence Career and Technical Academy or any Advanced Academics programs.
