School Counseling

School Counseling Services for Providence Public Schools: 

 Our district counselors have designed and implemented a Comprehensive School Counseling Program based on the American School Counselor Association National Model and the Rhode Island Framework for School Counseling to improve outcomes for all students.  The foundation of the program focuses on the three developmental domains of counseling: academic achievement, college and career readiness and social emotional support.  Our program is data driven with measurable student outcomes.  In examining and analyzing data outcomes on such topics as attendance, FAFSA completion, assessments, and academic success: with regard to class placement and support, we reflect on our practice and make informed proactive decisions to increase and enhance student achievement.

 School counselors time is spent providing the following:

• Direct services with students- large assemblies, whole classroom lessons (once per month at the elementary level), small groups (short term once per week for 4-6 weeks), lunch bunch groups, and individual counseling sessions

• Indirect services- on behalf of students, counselors consult, collaborate, and refer with others such as teachers, families, and outside counseling agencies

The School Counseling Scope and Sequence Curriculum, consists of proactive activities and lessons.  These activities and lessons for grades K-12 are designed to improve student outcomes and promote student academic success and personal growth.

Individual Learning Plan (ILP)

Providence Public Schools utilizes Naviance as the platform for each student’s Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to support their individual goals in middle and high school, as well as plan for their post-graduation endeavors. The Individual Learning Plan (ILP), The Student Success Plan, and End of Year Reflection is housed in PowerSchool Naviance for all students in grades 6-12. Naviance Student allows for personalization of college and career exploration experience, while utilizing specific planning and monitoring tools that customize and direct the development of the American School Counselor Association’s (ASCA) three domains, academic, career, and social-emotional. When students complete the ILP, they set goals, reflect on strengths and interests, explore college and career pathways, and create a resume. In addition, by completing the ‘Student Success Plan’ and ‘End-of-Year Reflection’ surveys, students can track credits toward graduation and identify areas in need of an intervention plan, such as credit recovery, tutoring, unit recovery, or individual support.
