Mount Pleasant High School music educator celebrated for transformative student leadership, inclusivity, and community impact.

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Providence Public School District (PPSD) is thrilled to announce Danielle Trial Lucini as the 2025-2026 Teacher of the Year.

The announcement was made during a heartwarming surprise visit to Mount Pleasant High School (MPHS) on Friday, June 5, 2026. In attendance to celebrate the honor were Rhode Island Deputy Commissioner of Education Drew Echelson, Superintendent Dr. Javier Montañez, Mount Pleasant Principal Wobberson Torchon, City Councilwoman Jo-Ann Ryan, Providence Teacher’s Union President Lindsay Paiva, school staff, students, family, and special guests.

A dedicated educator with 14 years of teaching experience—including 12 years dedicated to the students of Providence—Lucini has made a profound impact on her school community. She is widely recognized for combining an exceptional, student-centric classroom model with unmatched extracurricular programming. In her advanced Career and Technical Education (CTE) tracks, senior student teachers take the reins to select, analyze, block, and execute full ensemble rehearsals.

Reflecting on her teaching, Lucini articulates a clear philosophy of balancing healthy risk-taking with the removal of barriers. Her ultimate goal is to foster a space where students possess the confidence and skills to run the entire lesson themselves.

“What stands out most is her unwavering belief in students—and the intentional way she creates spaces where students feel seen, challenged, and empowered to lead,” noted one of her award recommendations. “She embodies our Equity Framework in action. She doesn’t just teach music; she changes trajectories, opens doors, and expands what our students believe is possible for their lives.”

Key Accomplishments and Community Impact

Lucini’s leadership extends far beyond the traditional classroom walls, bringing unprecedented opportunities to the Providence student body:

• National and Local Stages: Under her direction, students have performed at the Rhode Island State House, Providence City Hall, and represented the district on a national stage at the Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C.
• Funding and Access: She has secured over $200,000 in grants to eliminate financial barriers, ensuring all students have the resources to participate and thrive.
• Exclusive Partnerships: She acts as the exclusive Rhode Island representative for the prestigious MET Opera NYC "HD Live in Schools" program and designs innovative, inter-district curriculum initiatives.
• Bridging Communities: She is the founder and co-director of the long-running "Meet in the Middle" project, which deliberately connects urban and suburban schools through shared musical experiences.
• Inclusivity at the Core: Lucini champions multi-year growth tracking for everyone from absolute beginners to festival soloists, focusing heavily on building fully inclusive ensembles that welcome Exceptional Child Services (ECS) and Multilingual Learners (MLL).
• Beyond the School Day: She actively builds relationships past the final bell by founding and running vital extra-curricular initiatives, including the high school Ski Club and the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

“Danielle has been a leader in her school community and in the Providence Teachers Union for many years,” said Providence Teachers Union President Lindsay Paiva. “This award is well-deserved and we are so proud of all she has accomplished and everything she does for students and teachers every day.”

Danielle Trial Lucini holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Musical Theatre from Rhode Island College, graduating Cum Laude. Since joining the faculty at Mount Pleasant High School, she has played a pivotal role in championing arts education, language development, and personalized learning paths for high-needs and multilingual student populations.
