PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Providence Public School District (PPSD) proudly announces that Classical High School has been named the number one public high school in Rhode Island by U.S. News & World Report 2026-2027 Best High School rankings.

This top statewide distinction reflects Classical High School’s sustained dedication to academic rigor, high college readiness standards, and exceptional student achievement. In addition to securing the top spot in Rhode Island, Classical High School placed among the highest-performing public high schools nationally at #133.

“Classical High School being recognized as the number one public high school in Rhode Island is an incredible achievement and a testament to the hard work of our students, educators, families and community,” said Mayor Brett Smiley. “Providence is home to students with limitless potential, and this recognition showcases what they can accomplish with the support of dedicated educators and a community committed to their success. I am incredibly proud of the entire Classical community for earning this distinction and look forward to the continued success of our Public Schools.”

"Being ranked first in the state for high schools is a testament to Providence’s extraordinary students, dedicated educators, and supportive families who push for excellence every day," said Providence Public Schools’ Superintendent Dr. Javier Montañez. "Classical High School consistently demonstrates what is possible when high expectations are met with deep community support. We are immensely proud of this milestone and the precedent it sets across our entire district."

The annual rankings evaluate schools on college readiness, state assessment proficiency, and graduation rates. In addition, schools are evaluated on how effectively they serve all students, including underserved populations. The Advanced Placement participation rate at Classical High School is 91% and their graduation rate is 96%. Additionally, 61% of students in the school are economically disadvantaged.

The achievement comes after Classical was recognized by the Rhode Island Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School for their Exemplary High Performance in June.
