Turnaround Action Plan

Excellent Instruction. Every Classroom. Everyday.

  • Turning Hope Into Results

Providence Public School's Turnaround Action Plan is a conscientious approach to change that puts students first.

Created with input from the community, our 2020 plan is inspired by Three Pillars and a Foundational Principle of Efficient District Systems that are fundamental to our approach to transformation. “Turning Hope Into Results: A Turnaround Action Plan for the Providence Public School District” contains a set of ambitious, measurable goals to transform PPSD over a five year period, as well as 40 focused strategies to drive results, 26 of which were CDT recommendations.

As we work together to write a new, exciting chapter in our history, it is important to remember how we got here as well as celebrate how far we have come. In 2019, Johns Hopkins presented its report on PPSD to the Rhode Island Council on Elementary and Secondary Education. The report’s central finding is that the “system is fundamentally broken,” with challenges that include neglected school buildings, layers of needless bureaucracy, inadequate curriculum and professional development, and demoralized teachers and parents. Shortly before the plan was released in 2020, PPSD joined all Rhode Island public schools in transitioning to Distance Learning to complete the school year. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Providence school leaders, teachers, students, and families stepped up to keep learning happening.

Excellence in Learning

  • Raising the Bar for Teaching, Learning, and Career Readiness

Every student enrolled in Providence schools will have access to a high-quality, equitable, data-driven learning environment that will provide them with the confidence to succeed academically and continue on to postsecondary education opportunities. There will be a heightened effort to ensure multilingual learners have the resources they need to learn at or above grade level.

World Class Talent

  • Supporting Our Educators and Leaders

All Providence students will attend a school staffed by highly effective teachers and leaders who reflect the community’s diversity, and are singularly focused on student growth and achievement.

Engaged Communities

  • Supporting Students Beyond the Classroom

Transparent and authentic family and community engagement initiatives that respond to the unique needs of students and families will be implemented District-wide. Consistent, culturally sensitive communications from schools and the District will be required.

Efficient District Systems

  • Building Smarter, Stronger Structures

The District’s Central Office will be revitalized through the implementation of policies that allow for efficient decisions about educator personnel, resource distribution, and budgeting practices - delivering resources and support to the school level.
