Balanced Literacy
"Balanced literacy" as applied to the literacy initiative in Providence Schools, describes a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach to reading and writing instruction. The program focusses on three major areas: reading, writing and word study. Each day, our teachers engage children ina variety of reading and writing experiences. These include extensive amounts of daily reading; rereading of familiar materials; and a variety of dialy writing opportunities; and, reading with support or guided reading. Phonics instruction is incorporated daily . Throughout, emphasis is placd on comprehension and fluency.
