Adalius Thomas Visits Williams
Mr. Moseley welcomed Adalius Thomas of the New England Patriots to Roger Williams Middle School on May 16 to talk to the kids about the importance of education. Mr. Thomas gave the kids a little background information before sharing with them that his favorite subject was math. He explained to the students that they had to find something about school that they loved so the time would pass by faster and they would love coming to school. The students were very attentive during his talk.
Rebuilding Together
Approximately 100 Volunteers from Fidelity Investments in conjunction with "Rebuilding Together" along with Mr. Moseley, the principal, and a few faculty volunteers came to Roger Williams Middle School on Saturday, April 28, 2007, to help with painting doors and doorways, the teacher’s room, the offices, the cafeteria, landscaping and planting trees and flowers, building benches in the boys locker room, sanding and cleaning the benches in the girls’ locker room, and making our school beautiful. In addition to preserving and revitalizing houses "Rebuilding Together" works to improve the physical sites of non-profit agencies in Providence neighborhoods.

Groundhog/Job Shadow Experience
On Friday February 9, seventy (70) eighth-grade students were greeted by the "Groundhog" when they went on a Job Shadow Experience during Groundhog Day at Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children's Hospital, and The Coro Center. At "Job Shadow" we met our "Groundhogs", the professionals who volunteered to show the students what they do at the hospital. Everyone went with a different "Groundhog" and saw the different and exciting jobs that they have in the medical field. Kimberly went to Hasbro's and saw babies after they come out of surgery. She shadowed pediatric nurses and spent the day with at least 10 nurses. Yamari went to the Rehabilitation Center and she spent time learning about the different disabilities that people experience and how the doctors treat them so the pain goes away. After we worked with our professionals, we had a luncheon of pizza, salad, cookies and drinks and listened to Dr. Gus Cordeiro, the Vice President of the Hospital tell us about how many jobs are available and what we have to study in high school in order to qualify for the jobs. The hospital gave the students bags of stuff and some of the students were even given scrubs to wear.
Thank you to everyone who participated and also to VP Gus Cordeiro, for having us again for the seventh year, and a special thanks to Alexis Devine and Dianna Glass who planned this event. IT WAS A GREAT DAY!!!!!!

THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE
By Mr. C. Pride
Our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive was another great success. Due to the generosity of all, we were able to collect 1115 items and $745 in cash. With the cash, we were able to purchase items such as potatoes, onions, carrots, apples, cake mixes, frosting, cereal, pizza mixes, gift cards as well as additional Thanksgiving staples such as cranberry sauce, gravy, and stuffing mixes.
I would like to thank everyone who assisted me this year. The entire food drive was truly a group effort with members of our staff going above and beyond to help in various ways such as food shopping, identifying families, and contacting families.
As a result, 28 families benefited from our efforts.

From the Desk of… Mrs. Dalton, Guidance Department
Want to help your child do better in school? Talk to your child’s teacher! Do the “5Q’s!” The Parent Information Resource Center and the RI Department of Education recently created and designed a card called “Doing the 5Q”. The 5Q card is designed to help give the information parents and teachers need to begin communicating about how to help children succeed in school through family involvement in education.
These questions should be asked at parent/teacher conferences. These questions make it easier for families and teachers put the child at the center of their conversations.
Five Questions Every Parent Should Ask Their Child’s Teacher:
1. What are my child’s strengths? 2. What concerns do you have about my child? 3. How does my child work with others? 4. What information can I share with you about my child? 5. I want to be involved in my child’s education. How can we work together?

GYM NOTES
By Ms. B. DeRita, Physical Education Department
Many of our students at Roger Williams ask why the physical education teachers require the students to change for gym class. Personal hygiene and comfort are two main reasons. Various activities, exercises, games and sports are taught through-out the school year. Students are expected to participate in all activities and must wear the proper clothes to fully benefit from the gym class.
Every student should have sneakers, socks, shorts or sweat pants, and a T-shirt to change into for every class. Every student should also be prepared for cold weather and have a sweat shirt or jacket in their gym locker. All students are assigned a gym locker at the beginning of the school year so that they may keep their personal belongings and valuables locked up during class.
This year, the Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO) is offering a gym uniform for $10. The uniform is a maroon T-shirt and shorts. Both pieces must be purchased at the same time. Students can see Mrs. Nicolazzi in room DR-2 for more information.
All students should have deodorant as well as an extra change of clothes. No perfume or spray deodorant is allowed in the locker room, but moist towelettes are perfectly ok to use to freshen up.
Students are excused from gym class only with a note from the school nurse – NO ONE ELSE!! Doctor’s notes/excuses must be brought to the school nurse first. All students are required to come prepared, be on time, and participate in class.
Please feel free to contact the physical education department at any time at 456-9355.
