About Us
|
Roger Williams is one of several middle schools in Providence. Built in 1932 with funds from the WPA, the school was originally called Thurbers Avenue School. The name was later changed to Roger Williams in honor of the founder of Rhode Island. Today, Roger Williams serves a multicultural population of students in grades six through eight. Located in the heart of the south side of Providence, our students and their families form a diverse community of languages, cultures, and traditions. Our families include a wide range of educational levels, racial and ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic factors. Most of our student body comes from a low socioeconomic community. Therefore, 91% qualify for the free or reduced lunch program. There are approximately 876 students at Roger Williams and our faculty consists of approximately 75 teachers, many of whom have served in our school for a number of years. Every square inch of our building is utilized as either a core classroom or a resource room. We have a very large bilingual/English as a Second Language program. Many of our students come to us from their native countries without any knowledge of the English language. We also have a wide variety of special needs programs including bilingual, eighth grade inclusion, sixth and seventh grade intensive resource, a departmentalized program, and a full resource program.
