Physics First

Mount Pleasant High School was one of five high schools in the state selected to take part in a program called Physics First Rhode Island.

Next September, all ninth graders will take Physics followed by Chemistry in the tenth grade and Biology in the eleventh grade. This new course sequence will provide a more rigorous and connected science curriculum giving our students a solid foundation for advance placement and capstone courses in their senior year. This course sequence will help build the skills necessary for students entering RI changing workforce as well as provide better alignment with Grade Span Expectations.

As part of this initiative, science department chairs and science teachers at these schools will participate in professional development and receive mentoring throughout the pilot project. At least five teachers from each school will participate in the training. Participating schools will also receive new physics equipment and texts as well as microscale chemistry materials.

Cranston West High School, East Providence High School, Lincoln High School, and Woonsocket High School are also participating in this program.
