Helping to instill work force readiness
Established in 1982, the Academy of Finance prepares students for post-secondary education and careers through a theme-based, contextualized curriculum approach. Academic learning experiences are combined with hands-on work experience to help students develop the thinking and problem solving skills so critical to postsecondary education and career success.
The Academy of Finance introduces high school students to the broad career opportunities of the financial services industry, opening the door to new options and equipping students to make sound choices for the future. The Academy of Finance opperates as a small learning communityand is located in more than 400 high schools nationwide.
The Academy experience provides students withe the curriculum and guidance necessary for rewarding careers through intensive study with teachers and industry mentors. Students leave the Academy program with well-honed, highly marketable skills, based on a solid understanding of the connections that exist between their education and the workplace.
Events held during 2005-2006....
The Finance Academy was given accolades by Mayor Cicilline, at the Black Heritage Ball. Mayor Cicilline was excited that our students were present at the ball and complimented them for their work at the pre-ball entrance where all of the big donors were entering. This year, the ball was held at the Convention Center on February 11, 2006. The students took care of admissions and then enjoyed a fine dinner and music provided by a New York Band. It was an elegant night to remember! A great evening for all involved. Thank you Mr. Walsh from Bank RI! Mr. Proudfoot is introducing the students to the state wide Rhode Island Youth Entrepreneurship Program. This program designed by Mr. Proudfoot, will enable the Finance students to learn portable entrepreneurial skills that include THINKING, OBSERVING, COMMUNICATING, PLANNING, MARKETING, AND FINANCIAL LITERACY. We are excited to say the least!
Thanks to Mr. Proudfoot for providing this exciting learning experience!
The Finance Academy seniors assisted Miss Lilla during Wear Red Week. Funds were collected for the Heart Association and the Senior Class at school. Good Luck Mr. Hooper!
Mr. Joseph Hooper, Senior Vice President of Citizens Bank was honored at a retirement party. Joe being the senior member of the Finance Academy Board of Directors at Mount Pleasant was treated to a movie made at Mount Pleasant High School by the students he has helped during his career. Joe implemented the summer internships for the Mount Pleasant Finance Academy students. We wish him well. Good Luck Mr. Hooper!

Latest Notes from Ms Curran

Recently the Finance Students have been doing great things! We recently completed the Youth Entrepreneurship Program and celebrated the fact by joining about 200 other students state-wide at Evelyn's Villa in Warwick. There we met with the entrepreneurs and spoke with them one on one. We met many dignitaries and enjoyed a lovely luncheon. Each of Ms. Curran's classes gave their respective factotums two quotes weekly that were then put into booklet form with the factotum's name and our school name printed on the front. It was a wonderful experience! The Finance students recently visited the FED, The Federal Reserve in Boston, MA. We were led down the historical lane of the 1600's to present time. After the review of the artifacts, the students were asked to sit in a theater and with an electronic answer machine answer many questions about money and it's uses. From there with their free sample in tow (money that is no longer usable and shredded) we went the the Filenes's Basement Store to observe and calculate the 25%, 50% and 75% discounts on items for sale. Rte. 9 was the last stop, so that the students could try on different items that were not discounted and compare the quality, fabric, and price. A wonderful day was had by all. Bank RI, offered Ms. Curran tickets for her students to attend the Ballet, Don Quixote, at the VMA. It was such a sterling performance, and the costumes left the audience breathless with delight! This was a first for all of the students. The Ballet was so well received and the students are yearning for more! Thank you Bank RI. Fidelity is the last stop for this year for the Finance students. We will visit Fidelity and after having breakfast there, will be instructed on investments, IRA's, 401K's and the workings of the Fidelity Investment Co. , a privately owned business, with headquarters in Boston, MA. After a tour of the facility, the art work on their campus, and an explanation of the business workings, we will be provided lunch, drinks and a hearty sendoff. Thank you Holley Jensen. |
