How do I meet the new Civic and Social Requirements for Graduation?

Civic and Social Expectations
As part of each student’s portfolio, civic and social requirements must be met. The following rules apply:

All activities must be documented by completion of the attached documentation form or by a written letter from a participating organization, using organizational letterhead. Additionally, students must complete reflection forms for each activity.

Documentation should be handed in (during advisory periods) as completed.

Requirements: A minimum of 10 hours per year in civic activities and 10 hours per year in social activities must be completed (20 total hours).

Participation in a club or on a sports team counts as 10 hours; students must successfully complete the season to receive credit for their participation.

Students can complete a combination of various activities to reach their 10 hours.

All documentation must be handed in by 5/15/2008.

Examples of acceptable activities:

Civic
1. After school tutoring (C2)
2. Community day volunteer (C3)
3. Internships (unpaid) (C1)
4. Volunteer for non-profit organizations (C1,C4)
5. Participate in food drive, book drive etc.(C4)
6. School Based Community Service (C3)
7. Blood drive volunteer(C4)
8. CPR/First Aid certification(C1)
9. Work with Birch Vocational students(C2, C3)
10. Other activities can be approved by the school based coordinator

Social

1. Class office, student government, etc. (S1, S3)
2. Yearbook committee (S3, S4)
3. Explorer group, Boys Scouts or Girl Scouts (S1, S2, S3)
4. Church Volunteer Activities (S3)
5. After school clubs (e.g. French club, debate club, steppers, etc.) (S1,
S3, S4)
6. Participation in Sports teams (S3)
7. Peer Mediation Training (S1)
8. Other activities can be approved by the school based coordinator
