Graduation Requirements for the Class of 2008
1. 20 credits in course work

2. End of course examinations

3. Participation in NECAP state testing

4. Graduation portfolio containing
evidence of proficiency in:

    *English, Math, Science,
    Social Studies, Foreign Language,
    the Arts, and Technology

    *Applied learning skills such
    as critical thinking, problem
    solving, research, communication,
    and civic responsibility

    *Civic and Social expectations
    (Demonstrated through a minimum number of completed hours)


Four credits in English:

English 1 (1 credit)
English 2 (1 credit)
English 3 (1 credit)
English 4 (1 credit)

Two credits in math:

Algebra 1 (1 credit)
Geometry (1 credit)

Two credits in science:

Biology (1 credit)
Second Science (1 credit)

Two credits in social studies:

World History (1 credit)
US History (1 credit)

Technology:

Introduction to Computer Literacy (.5 credit)

Physical education:

Each year counts for .5 credit (2 credits)

Fine Arts (.5 credits)
Art
Music

Electives (7 credits)

A student receives one credit upon copmpletion of a full year course which meets five days per week; semester classes provide one half of a credit.

Four year colleges typically require 16-18 credits with a GPA of C or better

The Providence School Committe met over the summer and determined that students in the Class of 2008 will need a minimum of 20 credits to graduate. This change was implemented in order to provide the maximum number of students the opportunity to meet the state-mandated graduation requirements.
