English as a Second Language and Bilingual Education
The Providence School Department and the ESL/Bilingual Department of Mount Pleasant has both tactical and strategic goals.

The tactical goal is to enable the school to provide students with limited English skills (LEP) to equal access to academic programs and services and equal opportunities for developing skills related to their career choices.

The strategic goal is to meet the educational needs of each LEP student and provide opportunities for all students to become proficient in English.

Based on the specific needs of our children exists a vision called LIFT (Language of Instruction for Transition). This vision serves as a model for providing quality education for potentially English Proficient students whose first language is other than English.

The ESL department members work in teams to transform and envision the future of quality bilingual education.

Classroom News
Every two weeks one of the parents of Teolinda Brito-Abreu’s bilingual students comes to the classroom and speaks for about 15 minutes.

These parents share their expectations and dreams as immigrant parents as well as how their dreams are related to their children and their future.

They explain their family histories which often include the reason their family was separated for years before their eventual reunion in the United States of America. These talks serve to motivate and encourage students to take advantage of the educational opportunities that school and society is offering them now.

At the end of the year, Mrs. Brito-Abreu has an open house where parents and students display their work.
