This Years Debate Resolution
|
Resolved": The United States federal government should substantially decrease its authority either to detain without charge or to search without probable cause. Affirmative (in support of the change) - We believe their authority should be decreased. Negative (NOT in support of the change) - We believe things should stay the way they are because the United States needs to protect us from terrorists and terrorism at any cost. Examples of this year's topic
(This topic has 2 parts): Detaining without charging: Ex: A gang member named Jose Padilla who is "post war on terror" and a US citizen is being held without being charged. He has been in prison for 3 years. They call him an "Enemy Combatant" which means he is stripped of all rights of being a citizen. The question remains: "On what charge? Why? Should the Federal Government have the right to do that? Search without probable cause: Ex: (one of many) After 911, anyone who looked like a terrorist a.k.a man with a long beard and turban on his head, or go-T facial hair and dark skin, or middle east decent and seemed suspicious were being taken off planes, buses, and trains and searched before they were able to continue on with their business. Again, the question is as follows: Should the Federal Government be able to do this without probable cause? What constitutes probable cause?
If you are debating as the Affirmative team you are saying NO THIS IS WRONG! WHAT ABOUT OUR RIGHTS AS A US CITIZEN OR FREE COUNTRY? WE ARE INNOCENT UNTILL PROVEN GUILTY
If you agree to be on the Negative team you are saying YES THIS IS OK OR ELSE HOW COULD WE BE SAFE? WE NEED SECURITY AT ANY COST.
This year's resolution (topic) is a HOT one. There are many reasons to support both sides of this argument and many more examples also. If you feel strongly about this topic come out and debate it. I'm sure you will not only become much more aware and knowledgeable of what is going on in the world today but you also have a chance to debate both sides of the argument depending on the case. |
