| The original Hope High School |

Hope High School has seen many changes in its 164 year history. The original Hope Street High School opened in 1898 on the east side of the avenue, overlooking the reservoir, across the street from its current location. |

| The most important municipal construction projects of the depression decade were a new Hope High building on land reclaimed from the reservoir and the Mount Pleasant High School facility. These buildings were the heart of the city’s PWA program. Together they represented an expenditure of $3,875,000, of which the federal share was approximately $1,163,000. Both were opened for classes in September 1938. |
