POLICY HANDBOOK FOR STUDENTS & TEACHERS, 2007-08

POLICY ENFORCEMENT SEQUENCE: |
When a teacher feels it necessary to enforce a particular school policy as outlined in this handbook, it is recommended that the teacher follow the enforcement sequence below. STEP 1: TEACHER-STUDENT CONFERENCE: Teacher will make arrangements to meet with the student to discuss the policy in question. If disagreement cannot be resolved, proceed to step 2.
STEP 2: TEAM-STUDENT CONFERENCE: Team will make arrangements to meet with the student to discuss the policy in question. If disagreement cannot be resolved, proceed to step 3 or 4. Elective teachers should try and meet with the teams whenever possible.
STEP 3: COUNSELOR-STUDENT CONFERENCE: Team or teacher will refer the student to the school counselor to discuss the policy in question.
STEP 4: TEAM-STUDENT-ADMINISTRATION CONFERENCE Teacher, Team and Administration will make arrangements to meet with the student to discuss the policy in question and resolve the issue.
*PARENTS: IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT PARENTS BE CONTACTED AND INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY AND/OR ALL OF THE ABOVE CONFERENCES.
**FOR SE STUDENTS, THE ASSIGNED SE TEACHER SHOULD BE BROUGHT IN AT STEP 1 AND BE INVOLVED AT EVERY STEP OF THE POLICY ENFORCEMENT SEQUENCE.
***IF A STUDENT ESCALATES A SITUATION, ADMINSTRATION WILL BE BROUGHT IN IMMEDIATELY.
NOTE: When dealing with serious offenses, we will refer to PPS’s District Code of Behavior, Category 1-3 offenses and consequences.

POLICY 1: LATENESS/TARDINESS TO SCHOOL: |
EXPECTATIONS: Students are to report to their first block class by 8:25 daily.
DEFINITIONS:
1. LATE/TARDY: If a student arrives AFTER 8:25 am that student is LATE/TARDY. 2. EXCUSED LATENESS: Student arrives LATE WITH a valid excuse*. 3. UNEXCUSED LATENESS: Student arrives LATE WITHOUT a valid excuse*. 4. NEW DISTRICT POLICY: Any student who arrives after 10:30 without a valid excuse is not allowed to stay in school. It is earlier on Wednesday because of our shorter day.
CONSEQUENCES FOR LATENESS TO SCHOOL:
1. If a student arrives BEFORE 9am WITHOUT a valid excuse, student is LATE and should report to the class you were late to at 3:00 for 15 minutes that day. (TEAM/TEACHER DETENTION). That student should report to the main office to sign in and to obtain a late/tardy slip. The office can generate a list of students who have team detention that day for each team.
2. If a student arrives AFTER 9am WITHOUT a valid excuse, student is LATE and should report to the main office to sign in and to obtain a late/tardy slip. All students who arrive after 9am WITHOUT a valid excuse will receive lunch detention on the same day.
3. If a student is late to school 3+ times in any given week, parents are contacted and a meeting is scheduled with student, parent, team & administration to create a corrective plan.

POLICY 2: LATENESS/TARDINESS TO CLASS: |
EXPECTATIONS: Students are to arrive on time to all classes daily.
LATE/TARDY DEFINITION:
If a student comes to class after passing time without a valid pass, student is LATE/TARDY.
CONSEQUENCES FOR LATENESS TO CLASS:
1. If student is late to class less than 15 minutes, student should report to reporting teacher at 3:00 for 15 minutes that day. (TEACHER/TEAM DETENTION)
2. If student is late to class more than 15 minutes, student will receive lunch detention on the same or next day of school.
3. If student is late to class 3+ times in any given week, parents are contacted and a meeting is scheduled w/ student, parent, team, & administration to discuss the behavior and to create a corrective plan.
* All adults in the building will help direct students to their respective classes EVERY block.

POLICY 3: UNEXCUSED SCHOOL ABSENCES: |
DEFINITION: UNEXCUSED SCHOOL ABSENCE= CUTTING SCHOOL FOR THE ENTIRE DAY
EXPECTATION: Students are to report to school daily. If a student is ill or has a valid reason for missing school, student will need to bring in a valid excuse note* on the day he/she returns> to school. Student will need to show this note to all of his/her team teachers and/or administration. If student does not provide a valid excuse note, student’s absence is UNEXCUSED.
***All Unexcused absences will be investigated and documented. Parents will be contacted.

POLICY 4: UNEXCUSED CLASS ABSENCE: |
DEFINITION: UNEXCUSED CLASS ABSENCE=A CLASS CUT
EXPECTATION: Students are to report to all classes on time daily. If a student goes home ill or has a valid reason for missing class, student must be signed out and will need to bring in a valid excuse note* on the day he/she returns to school. Student will need to show this note to all of his/her team teachers and/or administration. If student fails to do this, the following should occur:
CONSEQUENCES FOR UNEXCUSED CLASS ABSENCE:
Teacher documents class absence. Teacher investigates absence. Teacher follows Policy Enforcement Sequence.
1. If a student is found to have cut class, student will receive lunch detention on that day. If class cutting continues, see Policy Enforcement Sequence.
DEFINITION: VALID EXCUSE NOTE: This note must explain why student missed class/school and must be signed by a parent, guardian or a doctor. A contact telephone number should also be included. All notes should be verified by teacher or admin.

POLICY 5: CLOTHING POLICY |
DRESS CODE Students must come to school in appropriate attire: • Pants, shirts and blouses must not be revealing/see-through • Exposed undergarments or midriffs (belly shirts) are not acceptable. • Tank tops and tube tops must be worn with a shirt with sleeves. • Shorts and skirts must come down to the length of the student’s extended fingertips. • Spandex clothing is permitted in P.E. classes only. • Hanging chains, sunglasses, hats, do-rags, handkerchiefs, bandanas, gang paraphernalia and clothing that displays profanity, encourages violence or the use of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, or has sexual connotations are not permitted. • Words or images on clothing may not be vulgar, or advertise alcohol, drugs or gang affiliation
* Discretion and common sense will be used when following the clothing policy.
HATS/HEADGEAR POLICY: Hats and headgear ARE NOT PERMITTED on school grounds.
HEADGEAR DEFINITION: Hats, caps, bandanas, doo-rags, headbands, visors, etc.
HEADGEAR EXCEPTION: Students who must wear headgear as part of their religious and medical practices (ie: Muslim, Jewish, etc.) will be permitted to do so.
RECOMMENDATION: If a student comes to school wearing inappropriate attire, the following procedure should occur: 1. Reporting teacher refers case to administration. 2. Administrator assesses questionable attire. 3. Administrator informs student of dress policy and informs student of his/her options below:
• Student can contact a parent and arrange to have alternate clothing brought to school immediately. • Student can borrow in-house alternate clothing provided by administration.

POLICY 6: DISRUPTIVE ELECTRONIC DEVICES: |
EXPECTATION: Students are NOT to use Cell Phones, Beepers, Walkman, etc. in class, in the hallways or on school grounds at any time during the school day. During the school day, these devices should be turned off and put away or stored in book bags/lockers or left at home.
EXAMPLES of DISRUPTIVE ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Cell Phones, Ipods, Gameboys, PSPs, etc.
If a student disregards a teacher’s NO DISRUPTIVE ELECTRONIC DEVICE Policy, the device will be confiscated.
PERSONAL MUSIC DEVICES The use of personal music devices/electronics is never allowed during class time or passing time, project based activities or cooperative learning experiences. (Code of Conduct) The only exception to this rule is if a student has it written in their IEP/504 Plan that they can use a personal music device.

POLICY 7: BATHROOM /DRINK/TRAVEL PASSES: |
RECOMMENDATION: Student should use bathroom/water fountain facilities at the following times: 1. Before school 2. At lunch 3. After school 4. During the block at teacher’s discretion
EXCEPTIONS: NO PASSES are to be given out during the first or last 20 minutes of any block.
RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Student must always sign in & out on Sign Out Sheet whenever he/she leaves the class. 2. ONLY 1 student out at a time. 3. ONLY 1 Pass per student per block.
CONSEQUENCES FOR ABUSING PASS PRIVILEGES: If a student abuses pass time (more than 3-5 minutes) student must report to reporting teacher at 3:00 for 15 minutes. If student continues to abuse the pass policy, he/she may lose that privilege and teacher should follow Policy enforcement Sequence.
As a reminder, we reached consensus regarding locking the bathrooms during class time. The downstairs bathroom will be locked while the upstairs bathroom will remain open with an administrative assignment outside that area. This will eliminate many of the problems we have had with the bathrooms this year.

POLICY 8: LEAVING SCHOOL GROUNDS: |
EXPECTATIONS: Students are NOT ALLOWED to leave school grounds without a permission slip signed by staff or parent/guardian. NOTE:Lunch time is from 11:25 to 11:50. Students are NOT to leave in cars at lunchtime.
CONSEQUENCES FOR LEAVING SCHOOL GROUNDS: If a student leaves school grounds without permission, reporting teacher should document and file incident with administration.
1. If student leaves school grounds during the school day, student will receive lunch detention. 2. Further offenses can result in suspension.

POLICY 9: FOOD/DRINKS IN CLASS: |
Recommendation: Students SHOULD BE permitted to eat snacks & drink beverages in class unless a teacher has a NO EATING/NO DRINKING POLICY in his/her class. Resealable drink containers should be used. No non-snack food in class (No sandwiches, meals, “smelly” or “messy” foods, etc.) Snack & drink privilege will be revoked if abused (mess, noise, disruption, etc.) EXCEPTION: FOOD, DRINKS & LAPTOPS: When laptops and or any computers are being used, students should NOT be permitted to eat or drink until after computer work is done. Also, students should not have food in the halls.

POLICY 10: SMOKING: |
EXPECTATION: Smoking is NOT permitted on school grounds. This is state law. If student is found smoking on school grounds, follow Policy Enforcement sequence.
