Cooley HST High School Philosophy

The Health, Science and Technology Academy is a unique learning community, committed to directly relating classroom learning to real world experiences in the health, science and technology fields in order to motivate students in their academic investigations. Through our courses, in-house activities and project-based learning experiences, our students build a strong foundation of literacy and numeracy skills with the added benefit of understanding of how to apply these skills in professional contexts. We connect our students to these opportunities through innovative partnerships with the health, science and technology career industry partners, that open their institutions as learning laboratories to our students and teachers, through site visits, internships and externships.

We are committed to providing students with highly individualized teaching and learning opportunities, responsive to their specific needs and strengths as learners, particularly through the small school nature of our learning environment. Students will be matched to an advisor who works directly with professional student support staff to provide academic, social and emotional assistance for students and to identify the barriers to learning that each student may experience.

We are committed to high level proficiency of each student, as well as a greater knowledge of the career choices open to them, and a sense of urgency about their future, based on real experiences in professional settings, and positive relationships with adults and peers. We believe that grounding our teaching and learning in a professional context will motivate students and teachers to be constantly active and engaged in shaping their own education.
