School-Wide Learning Expectations & Portfolio Requirements

Academic

Expectation #1

All students will acquire, analyze, and evaluate information and ideas to solve problems and justify conclusions.

Requirements

(1) An extended problem-solving project in three of the following areas:
(a) numbers and operations;
(b) geometry and measurement;
(c) functions and algebra;
(d) data, statistics, and probability.
(2) A project in the following area:
(a) A science inquiry project
(b) A lab report
(c) A scientific journal article
(3) A social studies project or paper.
(4) A documented research paper or project from any subject area.

Expectation #2

Students will demonstrate proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Requirements

(1) Complete all of the following written products:
(a) a response to literature
(b) another essay demonstrating critical thinking
(c) a creative piece (poem, play, short story, creative non-fiction - e.g. memoir)
(2) Deliver an individual oral presentation or participate in a debate or dramatic performance.

Expectation #3

Students will demonstrate a level-appropriate basic understanding of world language through listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Requirement

(1) An oral presentation and a piece of writing appropriate for the highest level of study reached.

Expectation #4

Students will demonstrate effective use of information and technology in research, presentation, and problem-solving.

Requirement

Students will demonstrate proficiency in this expectation through completion of projects that integrate technology as Power Point presentations, Excel spradsheets, graphing calculators, website design, desktop publishing, digital photography or filmmaking. Other examples are science fair projects, research papers, extended problem-solving projects, extended business project that integrate technology

Expectation #5

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the process of creating art and the influence of the arts in culture and history.

Requirements

Choose one or more of the art forms (music, dance, drama, visual arts) and include one piece of evidence that addresses at least one of the following skills: creating, performing, or responding (critiquing). Describe the cultural significance of each piece of evidence.

Expectation #6

Students will use knowledge of their own learning styles, interests, and strengths to identify goals, set priorities, manage progress and plan their educations and careers.

Requirements

Create a career action plan that includes:
(a) interest and skills inventories
(b) evidence of career exploration
(c) a resume
(d) a timeline for implementation of the action plan

Social
Expectation #7

Students will work actively and cooperatively to achieve group goals.

Requirements

Complete one of the following:
(1) Document and reflect on participation in the establishment and/or operation of a group extracurricular activity or work experience
(2) Document and reflect upon participation in group work done in class.

Expectation #8

Students will make appropriate choices that contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

Requirements

Complete one of the following:
(1) Design an implement a personal physical fitness and nutrition program.
(2) Document evidence of CPR/first aid/safety training.

Expectation #9

Students will understand and accept the benefits and consequences of their behavior.

Requirement

An essay reflecting on an activity (i.e., community service, pre-college program, extracurricular activities) or behavior (i.e., good attendance, effective study habits, excessive tardiness, chronic anger) that has had a positive or negative effect on your life.



Civic
Expectation #10

Students will demonstrate an understanding of political, economic, environmental, and social issues in order to become informed members of their community.

Requirement

An essay, project, or presentation that analyzes a problem in society an offers solutions based on analysis of appropriate information an ideas.
