| | ADOPT-A-FAMILY PROGRAM |

| | Students ask questions | ADOPT-A-FAMILY: THE WOMEN’S CENTER OF RHODE ISLAND & AMOS HOUSE Students from Team 2 (Mrs. Pangborn’s Grade 6 Social Studies Classes) participated in two Adopt-A-Family programs. Collectively the students raised $428.95 that they used to purchase items from wish lists. The wish lists were provided by the Women’s Center of Rhode Island and Amos House. Both organizations are located in Providence, RI. Students collected donations from friends and family. Some students worked odd jobs to make money to donate. Most students participated in bake sales that took place in the cafeteria before school each morning.
In addition to raising funds, the students wrote letters of hope and encouragement to all of the family members. They wrote to the families to tell them that they care about them, and wish them well in the future. Many students said that they are keeping the families in their prayers and hoping for better times ahead. Most students said that they will be thinking about their adopted families on Christmas morning.
A special thanks to Ms. Leslie C. Alexander, Health Care Coordinator for Amos House, Ms. Kerri Duarte, Amos House, and Pat Henry, Development Director of the Women’s Center of Rhode Island for sending the wish lists and organizing the delivery of the donations. Also, thanks to the many parents and family members who contributed gift cards, money, and baked goods. They truly helped to make this program a great success for their children.

| | The Women's Center of RI Visit the Classroom | On Thursday, December 9, several students were on hand to present the donations to the representatives from the Women’s Center. The students learned about the center, and asked questions interesting and thoughtful questions.
On Saturday, December 11, Ms. Kerri Duarte, Executive Chef from the International Charter School, and Asst. Chef at Amos House, accepted our gifts for the Amos House Adopt-A-Family Program. Ms. Duarte offered a guided tour of the Amos House facility. We are hoping to extend this program to several classes next year.
Students commented on the project:
Aaron Osei (student) “This project made me feel happy because I helped people that are in need. Once I started helping, I kept wanting to give more to other people. It makes me feel good inside.”
Alice Russell (student) - “I really enjoyed working on this project because I felt like I was giving to a good cause. It makes me want to go and give to another charity, and do this again next year!”
Frances Adewusi (student) “I found out that it is really better to give than to receive. Giving gives you a happy feeling that you can remember all of the time. When you think about it, it makes you happy.”
Jasmine Smith (student) “This project made me feel like I was giving to the community and that makes me feel good about myself. I will think about my adopted family on Christmas morning.”
Eli Cortes (student) “It feels so good to give. I never knew that before!”
Lindsey Kopech (student) “I think that the people we gave presents to will feel special. They will know that someone cares about them and want them to be happy.”
