What is Two-Way Bilingual education?
• integration of English dominant (Spanish Language Learners, SLLs) and Spanish dominant (English Language Learners, ELLs) students
• all students are considered second language learners
• all students receive instruction in and through two languages (Spanish and English)
Why two-way? What are the benefits?
• promotes learning in two languages, literacy in two languages • provides students with a distinct advantage in regards to the power of language • students receive the same rigorous academic content as that of all other schools in our district • prepares students for a job market that is increasingly calling for a bilingual workforce and translators
What are the features of Lima’s Two-Way Bilingual instruction?
• two-way instruction begins in Kindergarten • expands on a yearly basis
• Kindergarten students receive native language instruction for half their day and second language instruction for the remaining half of the day (Two-Way 50/50 model)
