Michael Lazzareschi |
King principal named RI Distinguished Principal for 07-08! |
The Rhode Island Association of School Principals (RIASP) has named Michael Lazzareschi, principal at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, the Rhode Island National Distinguished Elementary Principal for 2007-08.
According to the Association’s letter, Mr. Lazzareschi was chosen by the selection committee “for the exemplary way in which he has performed his administrative duties while meeting the needs of both students and staff.” They note that in his three years at King, Michael has worked to ensure that staff and community stakeholders work collaboratively to meet the academic and social needs of all students, and to shift staff and community focus from behavioral issues to improving student achievement. In this time, King has made steady progress in AYP status and in NECAP scores, with above-average NECAP scores this year for all student groups, according to Rhode Island Department of Education data.
He will be honored in RI in May and will also be honored at the National Association of Elementary School Principals 2008 National Distinguished Principals program in Washington, D.C. in October.

Beliefs Statement |
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School
The administration, staff and parents of the King Elementary School believe that children should come first and that all children can learn and achieve the high educational standards that are set for them with sufficient time, clear expectations, effort and effective teaching practices.
We believe that the single most deciding factor in student achievement is parental involvement and community engagement.
We believe that all learning should be standards-driven with curriculum of academic rigor to enable students to become life-long learners and productive members of society.
We believe that decisions about teaching and learning should be data-driven to help increase student achievement.
We believe that to accomplish these goals it is essential that there be constant and continuous communication between administrators, teachers, parents and community leaders.
We believe that each child should develop into a self-motivated, resourceful problem solver and become an individual who is accountable and responsible for his/her own behavior. It is necessary, therefore, that they become individuals who respect themselves, adults, other children, and other cultures.
We believe that it is the responsibility of the many stakeholders at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School to be models of the high expectations and standards that we anticipate from the children.
