art MLK Students Work on Display at RISD
RISD Museum
Recently, the RISD museum hosted the exhibit along with a celebration of African-American and African arts. A family workshop was taught by Cynthia Ross Meeks, and African dancers and drummers performed in the auditorium. Third-grade parent Terri Spisso says, "A big thanks to Ms. Schroeder for her hard work in coordinating the MLK Free-for-all Saturday at the RISD Museum. The museum scavenger hunt, hands on activities, and African drumming performance were great - but not as fantastic as seeing our MLK students' works of art hanging in an art museum!"
Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School students have partnered with the RISD Museum for a student art show that runs through March 4. The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students created collages after studying the work of Romare Bearden - the collages are on display in the museum's community space. MLK art teacher Ms, Katrina Schroeder coordinated the event.

GK-12 and Brown University
This exciting program involves Brown graduate students and Dr.Gregory Crawford, Dean of Engineering, Professor of Engineering and Physics who teach Martin Luther King students. We are now all caught up in the excitement of science. This efforts have included delivery of hands-on, application-based teaching “modules” in the classroom. In each case, the graduate students and their developed modules have been very well received by our teachers and students.
Mt Hope Learning Mount Hope Learning Center Partnership
21st Century Community Learning
Mount Hope Learning Center was awarded a 21st Century Grant to partner with King Elementary School to provide an after school program. This 5-year grant award allows us to provide support to the students at King who need it most. The goal of our after school program is to identify low and middle performing students and help them get up to grade level by providing homework help, academic enrichment, mentors and one-on-one tutors. Students are organized and separated by grade level to spend 3:15-5:00pm in a classroom at King working on their homework and recieving additonal standards based curriculum support with the same instructor throughout the school year. Then at 5:00pm, students reconvene in the cafeteria. At this point they can choose to spend the last hour of the day finishing up their homework, playing chess and other games, or go to the gym and participate in an organized activity designed to help them work out all the physical energy building up during their long day at school.
Miriam Hospital Life Span Partnership in Education
Miriam Hospital: King School’s Partner in Education

For many years, Miriam Hospital has been our “Partner in Education” through a program that links community agencies with city schools. Bonnie Braga, a Miriam Hospital employee, is our contact person and has been instrumental in establishing many ongoing programs that benefit the King community.

Some of the ongoing support that Miriam hospital provides to King students includes: the “Power Lunch Program”, a lunch time tutoring program that links a hospital employee with a fourth or fifth grade student for weekly reading help; the “Ground Hog Job Shadow Day” program which brings our fifth grade students to the hospital to learn about the various careers that are available in a hospital; the free printing of our newsletter, Kaleidoscope; a “Kick Butts Day” program to stress the importance of not smoking; a First Aid class for all the fifth grade students; and providing classroom speakers for teachers when requested. There have also been many other programs and events over the years that Bonnie and Miriam Hospital have assisted with. Bonnie has always been very receptive to special requests from teachers and tries to provide whatever support she can.

The King School Community is very lucky to have Miriam Hospital and Bonnie Braga as our “Partner in Education”.

Recently, Dr. Kathleen Hittner, President and Chief Executive Officer of Miriam Hospital spoke to MLK Elementary fourth through sixth graders about heart health. Nurses from Miriam joined Dr. Hittner, presenting more information to students about cardiovascular health. We are grateful to the Miriam Hospital staff for its ongoing service and commitment to MLK students. Thank you!

class Pennies for Patients
MLK Elementary students are participating in the annual Pennies for Patients fundraising drive to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Your children came home with information about this. We encourage to to participate if you can - it's a great cause, and a wonderful experience for the children to see how much they can give when the join forces and collect money together. A little from each can add up to a lot! There are prizes, too - the top fundraising classroom at MLK will get a pizza lunch (very motivating for kids!). Thank you for participating.
