Vartan Gregorian Wins $5,000 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grant!

Outdoor Learning Peace Garden to be built in 2007-08 School Year!

The PTO is so pleased to announce that our school was chosen out of hundreds of applicants to receive $5,000 to improve the courtyard area. After meetings among students, teachers, and parents, a grant was submitted requesting funding for the Outdoor Learning Peace Garden. The courtyard, currently under-used, will become a space for children to interact with nature through gardening, science projects, contemplative time, and play. Our plan encompasses themes the students are interested in: peace, recycling, growing food and other useful plants, weather, and learning outdoors. The plan for the space includes a raised-bed vegetable/herb garden; recycled plastic benches and tables to be placed under the trees; a peace art project creating ceramic tiles for the walls surrounding the courtyard; a platform for performances and other activities, and landscaping, including a butterfly garden.

Many projects and activities have been envisioned for this new space. Children will be able to sit and read, write poetry, or draw in nice weather. A sculpture garden could be created with sculptures created by children using recycled materials. The vegetable and herb garden as well as the butterfly garden provide an opportunity to study plants and life cycles. A weather station will provide another opportunity for science learning. One class even suggested planting a Native American vegetable garden and colonial herb garden to link nature and social studies. We see the improved space as hosting many more school rituals, gatherings, and activities.

We believe that an Outdoor Learning Peace Garden at Vartan Gregorian will be a source of learning and pride for our school community. If you would like to help in any way in the renovation, please contact Christy Chase at christychase@cox.net by the end of the school year. Stay tuned for further information.
