Educator, community leader, politician and judge, Anthony Carnevale was born in Providence, Rhode Island on October 2, 1950, the son of the late Antonio and Mary F. (Stracqualursi) Carnevale. He was a product of Providence Public Schools, attending Merino and Laurel Hill Elementary Schools, and the Oliver Hazard Perry Middle School before graduating from Mount Pleasant High School in 1968. His high school yearbook listed his ambition to become an Industrial Arts teacher.
Carnevale pursued that ambition when he began college at Rhode Island College. There he was a member and past president of the Sigma Iota Alpha fraternity. During his high school and college years, Anthony worked for his family at Carnevale Fence Company on Valley Street in Providence
In 1970, Carnevale attended basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He would remain in the United States Air Force Reserve for 21 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.
Carnevale received a Bachelor of Science degree with a Major in Industrial Arts from Rhode Island College in January 1973. He immediately began a teaching career, and would return to Oliver Hazard Perry Middle School serving as a teacher in Industrial Arts and Mathematics. He would later become a guidance counselor. In May 1976, Carnevale received his Master of Education degree from Providence College.
Anthony Carnevale was elected to the Rhode Island House of Representatives as a delegate from Providence and Johnston's 12th District in 1976. He would represent that district for 12 years covering 6 terms. During his tenure, Representative Carnevale would chair the Joint Committee on Accounts and Claims as well as the Health, Education and Welfare Committee.
In August of 1979, Carnevale married Audry B. Neri, and entered into a loving partnership that would continue throughout his lifetime.
In 1984, Carnevale earned his Juris Doctorate from Suffolk University Law School in Boston. He was admitted to the Rhode Island Bar Association that same year. In 1988 Anthony Carnevale was named to the position of Magistrate of the Rhode Island Superior Court. He would be temporarily assigned as a justice of the Rhode Island District and Superior Courts from 1990-1991.
Throughout his life, Judge Carnevale was dedicated to children's causes. He was a long time member of the Boy Scouts of America - a committee member of Troop 26, Providence and a member of the Camp Yawgoog Alumni Association. He served as Commissioner for camping events for the Narragansett Council.
Judge Anthony Carnevale was extremely active in the local community. He served as a Board Member of the Hartford Park Community Center and the Silver Lake Annex Multi-Purpose Community Center. A member of the Order of the Sons of Italy in America Loggia Piave No. 364 where he was an annual participant in the Order's Morra Tournament. Carnevale was also a member of the Rhode Island Bocce League, the St. Bartholomew Church Holy Name Society Bowling League, the Rosario Society, the St. Bartholomew Society, the Justinian Law Society, the Rhode Island Association of Italian American Police, the Highland Rod and Gun Club, the Smithfield Lions Club and h Aurora Civic Organization. He was a communicant of the Holy Cross Church on Hartford Avenue.
Judge Carnevale was a recipient of countless awards and testimonials in recognition of his love and
dedication to children and the community.
Anthony Carnevale passed away on August 7, 2000 at the age of 49.
