Dorcas Family Literacy Program
The Dorcas Family Literacy Initiative is a program funded by the Toyota Corporation, in conjunction with the Providence School Department and the National Center for Family Literacy. Five cities nationwide were selected to receive this grant: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, and Providence.
The program targets the Latino population and has been implemented in four Providence schools: William D'Abate, Robert Bailey, Charles Fortes, and Alfred Lima. The participants are Latino parents of children that attend these four schools. This program consists of four components:
*Adult Education- The education that parents receive from 9:00 to 1:00 Monday through Thursday and evening classes from 5:00 to 8:00. Participants receive ESL and computer instruction.
*Child education- The education that participants'children receive daily from their classroom teachers.
*Parent time- Consisting of informational sessions or workshops that help the adult students become better parents by understanding the development of their children and strengthening their knowledge of the school system.
*PACT (Parent And Child Time)- These are interactive learning activities that both parents and children participate in once per week. These activities have educational objectives and take place after school hours.
In addition to these components, parents have the chance to visit their children's classrooms, observe how their children are educated, and learn how they can help their children at home with their schoolwork.
The Dorcas Family Literacy Program meets regularly to ensure that all of these criteria are integrated with the school curriculum. The cooperation and enthusiasm of the team members have made this program very successful!

The Parent Engagement Group at Bailey consists of parents and family members who bring knowledge, support, and ideas to help strengthen the bond between school and home. New parents are always encouraged to join and help make our school the best it can be! |
