Meet the School Board

Mary McClure Mary McClure
Mary has been on the Providence School Board since January 1999. A graduate of Brown University, Ms. McClure was actively involved in the parent-teacher organizations at Martin Luther King, Nathan Bishop, Nathanael Greene Schools and Classical High School and served on the Providence Gifted Advisory Council. She was a co-founder of Parents for Providence Schools, a citywide organization of parents that advocated for reform in the Providence Public Schools in the early 1990's, and of Child's Play, a cooperative alternative nursery school. She was a member of the executive committee of the Rhode Island Association of School Committees, and is currently a member of the Rhode Island Region I School-to-Career Council and the board of the East Side/Mt. Hope YMCA. Ms. McClure is married and the mother of two sons, both of whom attended Providence Public Schools. She retired from her position as the Director of Academic Computing Technology at Brown University in June 2001. Term: Jan 2008 - Dec 2010.

Rosanna Castro Board Member
Rosanna currently works for the Howard R. Swearer Center for Public Service as the Program Coordinator for the National College Advising Corps at Brown University. She provides support to seven full-time College Guides and additional part-time undergraduate volunteers that work in local high schools and community agencies to increase college access services for first generation college-bound students. Rosanna is a graduate of Hope High School (2000) and a 2004 graduate of Brown University where she earned a degree in Education Policy. She has worked broadly in the Providence community on health, immigration and education equity, reform and access issues. She also serves on the Young Voices Board and the RI Urban Education Task Force. She is President of the local Graduate/Professional Chapter of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority Inc., and a member of the RI Young Professionals, an auxiliary to the Urban League of RI. Term: Jan 2006 - Dec 2008.


Jill Holloway Board Member
Jill is the Director of the RI Adult Education Professional Development Center, a new initiative that supports the Adult Ed/ Workforce Development community of RI. She was previousky at Year Up for 3 + years, an educational and training opportunity for urban young adults. Jill had previously worked in public schools, K-12, urban and rural, for 16 years, the last eight of these in Providence. She was an Internship Coordinator, Guidance Counselor and a Director of a small school. She served on the Advisory Board for the Network School, and the Steering Committee for RIDE's High School Graduation by Proficiency Committee. Jill completed the coursework in the Educational Leadership Doctoral Program at Johnson & Wales University, earned a Master's of Education degree from Keene State College and B.A. from Portland State University in Oregon. Term: Jan 2006 - Dec 2008.

K McKenzie_08 Katherine McKenzie Board Member
Kathy plays an active role in the community. Her involvement includes: vice chairman of the board of trustees and chair of the planning committee of Women & Infants’ Hospital; former trustee and vice chair of The Metropolitan YMCA (the largest non-profit community-based agency in Rhode Island); member of the advisory board for Sobel and Raciti, a national EAP firm; and founder of the charity Christmas for Everyone Starts with You. In 2006, she was appointed to a three-year term on the Providence School System Board of Education. She is also a member of the board of visitors of Lenoir Rhyne College in North Carolina; has been a guest lecturer at Wake Forest University; and an advisor to Salem College, the second-oldest women’s college in the country. She also has been a conference speaker for numerous banking conferences on various topics.

Kathy recently retired from Citizens Financial Group, Inc., headquartered in Providence, R.I. where she was the Group Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer. She is a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C. and the Young Executive Institute of the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler School of Business in Chapel Hill. Kathy was a native of Wilmington, N.C. before making her home in Providence, R.I. Term: Jan 2006 - Dec 2008


Philip Gould Board Member
Philip Gould is Professor of English at Brown University. He grew up in Baltimore and attended Brown (BA History, 1983), and afterwards taught in Providence for a few years in the 1980s. He spent a decade in the Midwest, getting a PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1993), and living in Chicago while teaching at DePaul University. He is the author of two books and many articles on early American literature and history. For the past five years he has served on the education committee and the board of directors for a charter school in Providence. Phil is married to Dr. Athena Poppas, a cardiologist at Rhode Island Hospital. They have three children; the youngest is in a special education program at one of the Providence city schools. Phil has run numerous marathons and likes to spend time with his family in Maine. Term: Jan 2008 - Dec 2010.

Ronnie Ronnie Young Board Member
Ronnie is working as a Community Planner with Greater Elmwood Neighborhood Services. Born and raised in South Providence, he attended Community Preparatory School, class of 95. Ronnie then went onto Classical High and graduated in 1999. Both Providence public school experiences changed his life and contributed to his passion for education. Ronnie is a 2006 graduate of Roger Williams University. Term: Jan 2008 - Dec 2010.

b2 Grace Gonzalez Board Member
Grace is employed at Neighborhood Health Plan of RI as Supervisor of Marketing where for the past 10 years her dedication has been to serve her community by helping families obtain affordable health insurance through the State’s RIte Care program. Grace is currently enrolled in Providence College were she plans to obtain her Master’s Degree in Business Administration. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration through Revan’s University and graduated from the Community College of RI with an Associate Degree in Science. In 2005, she received the Bill Richardson Award recognizing her for her community efforts. In 2003, she received Healthy Schools Healthy Kids award for contributions made to coordinated school health. She served as an AIDS educator for Project Shields, educating high school teenager on prevention. Gonzalez served on many community boards such Childhood Lead Action Project, YMCA, among others. Currently she is the Vice President of the Back to School Celebration, successfully distributing over 18,000 free school supplies in coordination with 40 community organizations. Term: Jan 2007 - Dec 2009.

b6 Maila Touray
Maila holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Johnson & Wales University. Maila is a former teacher from Africa and while in Africa, founded an organization to combat substance abuse among youth that continues to exist today. Mr. Touray is the father of three children in Providence Public Schools. Term: Jan 2007 - Dec 2009.

b7 Robert Wise
Bob is a graduate of Harvard University's graduate program in government, and has served as a member of the City's 1998 PROBE committee. He is presently Materials Manager for Astro-Med Inc. (West Warwick). Mr. Wise is the father of five children, four of whom are presently in Providence Public Schools and the eldest a graduate of Providence public schools. Term: Jan 2007 - Dec 2009.
